Mark Text for DeepL was created by DorinDXN
Hello, hope you're OK.

How can I mark text in Word with TransTools+ to be ignored by DeepL?
I tried as describe in documentation but DeepL translates the hidden text regardless.

cheers,
Dorin

Hello Dorin,

Since hidden text formatting is not honored by DeepL, I recommend you to use any CAT tool that ignores hidden text formatting (e.g., Trados Studio, memoQ, Memsource, smartCAT, Wordfast Pro, etc) to import the Word document, copy all segments from source to target using the appropriate command, then export the document in bilingual, two-column Word format (the above CAT tools have a capability to perform such export for translation editing), copy the translation column to another Word document, translate this Word document in DeepL, then paste the column to the bilingual document, save it and import back into the CAT tool. This will update the translations, and you can then export the translated document in the original format.
The easiest option would be to use smartCAT (free) or Memsource (you can translate up to 2 documents in the free account), which are both cloud CAT tools. You can watch introductory videos on these tools to understand how to import and export documents. You can find information about bilingual Word export in the documentation of these tools.

Best regards,
Stanislav

Thank you for fast yet informative reply.

I guess I'll need to code some macro to replace that particular text with numbers , send to DeepL then replace back.

BTW, maybe you can add
"hide as numbers" or smth. must be reversible,
as a 4th option in the future releases of TT+ : )

Dorin

Can you elaborate what you mean? Replacing each sequence of hidden text with a unique number?

Best regards,
Stanislav

Sure, e.g.

"Thank you for the great TransTools+ !"

can be converted in

Ah, I see what you mean.

This is not a commonly requested feature because, after hiding, the majority of translators import Word documents into CAT tools and, if they use DeepL, they connect DeepL to their CAT tool and do pretranslation directly from the CAT tool so that they have a chance to post-edit the translation within the CAT tool. So, for now, this feature is a low-priority item for me, but I will revisit it if there are other requests.

Note that there are many ways this feature can go wrong: DeepL can modify such strings and it will still take some time to manage the entire process (run macro to replace all hidden paragraphs with such unique strings, then run another macro on the translated document to replace these unique strings with original text). Also, keep in mind that the text should not have any inline formatting, bookmarks, fields, etc., otherwise this formatting will be lost during the back-translation.

I recommend you to use the CAT tool approach (hide with TransTools+, import into CAT tool like Memsource or smartCAT, export bilingual, copy translation to another document, translate with DeepL, paste back into bilingual document, import bilingual to CAT tool, export final document). This will take you 5 minutes or so and this approach is bullet-proof.

Best regards,
Stanislav

Thanks, appreciate the info and your time, I'm sure you're right :)

I have zero experience with any CAT Tool,
I must use Word and must use DeepL :)
I'll try to hide and/or replace the text somehow.

keep up the good work!

cheers,
Dorin
