TransTools for Microsoft Word
-
Checking successful installation
Open Microsoft Word.
If you have Microsoft Office 2007 or later, you should see "TransTools" tab on the ribbon:
If you have Microsoft Office 2003 or earlier, check for "TransTools" menu at the top of Word application window:
Click on any TransTools tool in the ribbon or menu. The tool dialogue should appear on the screen.
If you don't see TransTools ribbon or menu or nothing happens when you click in the ribbon / menu:
- Make sure that you complete installation properly.
- You may also need to close applications which rely on Microsoft Word (e.g. Outlook) and restart Microsoft Word.
- If Adobe Acrobat is installed on your computer, TransTools menu in Microsoft Word 2003 or earlier will not be visible (this is a known bug in Adobe Acrobat), so you will need to right-click Word toolbars and select 'TransTools' from the dropdown menu. This will give you access to all TransTools commands.
- Follow the instructions below.
- If nothing works, refer to Troubleshooting section or send a support request here.
-
What to do if TransTools is not visible on the ribbon or menu after a successful installation
To make sure that Microsoft Word can see TransTools, do the following:
-
Word 2007 and newer versions:
Open Word Options dialogue by clicking the large Microsoft Office icon in the top left corner (Word 2007) or File tab (Word 2010+) and then clicking Word Options button or Options menu at the bottom.
Select Add-Ins from the list on the left and check whether TransTools.dotm is included in the list as shown below. Note that TransTools must be under Active Application Add-Ins, not under Inactive Application Add-Ins:
If TransTools is listed under Inactive Application Add-Ins, find the Manage list at the bottom of the screen, choose Word Add-Ins from the list and press Go... button:
In the Templates and Add-Ins dialogue, check TransTools.dotm in the list and press OK.
TransTools should now become available under a separate TransTools tab.
-
Word 2003 and older versions:
Open Templates and Add-Ins dialogue by selecting Tools -> Templates and Add-Ins... from the menu.
If TransTools.dot is unchecked, check it and press OK.
TransTools should now become available on the menu.
If the above does not help, Word may have added TransTools to the list of disabled items, often after a serious crash. Try the following solution:
-
Word 2007 and newer versions:
Open Word Options dialogue by clicking the large Microsoft Office icon in the top left corner (Word 2007) or File tab (Word 2010+) and then clicking Word Options button or Options menu at the bottom.
Select Add-Ins from the list on the left. In the Manage list at the bottom, select Disabled Items and click Go button. If TransTools.dotm is included in the list of disabled items, select it and click the Enable button, and finally click the Close button:
-
Word 2003 and older versions:
Click Help -> About Microsoft Office Word and then click Disabled Items... button at the bottom of the dialogue.
If TransTools.dot is included in the list of disabled items, select it and click the Enable button, and finally click the Close button:
-

What to do if there are security warnings
If you see a security warning during Microsoft Word start-up (or the yellow warning bar below the ribbon) or if nothing happens when you try to run any TransTools command, your Macro Security settings are blocking the macros contained in the TransTools add-in. You need to change Microsoft Word's Macro Security settings as follows:
-
Word 2007 and newer versions:
Open Word Options dialogue by clicking the large Microsoft Office icon in the top left corner (Word 2007) or File tab (Word 2010+) and then clicking Word Options button or Options menu at the bottom.
Select Trust Center from the list on the left and then click Trust Center Settings... to the right.
First, select 'Add-ins' from the list on the left and make sure that 'Require Application Add-ins to be signed by Trusted Publisher' and 'Disable all Application Add-ins (may impair functionality' are NOT checked as shown below:
Second, select Trusted Locations from the list on the left and make sure that ..\Microsoft\Word\Startup folder is in the list of trusted locations and that Disable All Trusted Locations checkbox is UNCHECKED, as shown below:
If ..\Microsoft\Word\Startup folder is not included in the list for some reason, press Add New Location... to add this folder.
To save the changes, press OK to close the dialogue, then OK again to save Word Options.
-
Word 2003 and older versions:
Go to Tools -> Macro -> Security... and click Trusted Publishers tab. At the bottom of the dialogue you will see a checkbox named 'Trust all installed add-ins and templates' . Enable/check this checkbox and click OK. Restart Microsoft Word. This should allow you to run TransTools commands.
If you see a yellow bar with “Macros are disabled” message, Microsoft Word may be loading TransTools add-in from a folder which is not listed under Trusted Locations in the Trust Center, and therefore considers TransTools as an untrusted application. To check this, open Word Options dialogue by clicking the File tab (Word 2010+) or the large Microsoft Office icon in the top left corner (Word 2007), click Options menu or Word Options button at the bottom, select Trust Center from the list on the left and then click Trust Center Settings... to the right, and finally select Trusted Locations from the list on the left. Carefully check that the folder where TransTools.dotm is located is listed in this section. This is especially true of localized Office versions, e.g. German, Dutch, French, etc. versions where the AddIns folder has a different name. Once you add the path to TransTools.dotm folder to this list and restart Word, the issue should be fixed.
If the above does not work, also see the item below.

What to do if you see a warning when you click a button in TransTools ribbon
In some cases you may see the following error when you click any button in TransTools ribbon:
There are two possible issues:
-
TransTools add-in is blocked by your antivirus program. Some antivirus programs may block specific TransTools add-ins, such as TransTools for Word, because they consider them infected. One of such antivirus programs is 360 Total Security. TransTools products are checked for viruses on a regular basis and there has never been a single report about TransTools users being infected due to TransTools products. Do the following: close Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, then uninstall TransTools (make sure that the option to keep user settings in the uninstallation program remains checked), then go to your antivirus settings and add the problematic add-in's folder to the trusted locations list. Add-in folders are as follows:
- TransTools for Word: C:\Users\<your_user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP
- TransTools for Excel, TransTools for PowerPoint: C:\Users\<your_user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AddIns
- TransTools for Visio, TransTools for AutoCAD: C:\Users\<your_user_name>\Documents\TransTools
Note: 'STARTUP' and 'AddIns' folders mentioned above may be translated in some versions of Microsoft Office such as the French or German versions.
- Problem after an update to Microsoft Office. Do the following: close Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, then uninstall TransTools (make sure that the option to keep user settings in the uninstallation program remains checked). Then download the latest version of TransTools from the Download page and install it. Open the Office application where you had the problem. The issue should be fixed.

Initial configuration of TransTools package
If you are about to use Language check for Word, Language check for Excel and Automatic Localization / Manual Localization features of TransTools for Word / Excel, you will need to configure the package first.
TransTools configuration is accomplished from 'TransTools for Word'. Open Microsoft Word.
If you have Word 2007 or later, select the TransTools tab, click TransTools button, and select "Configure..." from the menu.
If you have Word 2003 or earlier, choose 'TransTools' menu, and select "Configure...". You will be presented with a configuration dialogue.
See TransTools Configuration page for instructions on how to use it.
Moving TransTools configuration file to a centralised location
If your translation department is on a LAN (local area network), you may wish to provide every translator with access to the same configuration file (and thus the same configuration settings).
In order to do this:
- Move TransTools.cfg from the installation directory (located, by default, under 'Documents' folder) into a network directory of your choice. Provide read/write permissions as appropriate.
- Update all TransTools.loc files. These are located in the add-in directories of 'TransTools for Word' and ' TransTools for Excel'. Shortcuts to each of these directories are created in the 'Configure' sub-folder of TransTools installation folder (if you used the Automatic Installer). Open each of those files and enter the correct new path of TransTools.cfg (do not forget the file extension, CFG!) instead of the old path. This operation must be performed on each translator's computer – your network administrator may easily prepare a special script to do this.
- Restart the Microsoft Office application in order for TransTools add-in to pick up the new location of the configuration file.
Changing location of 'TransTools for Word' add-in
In some cases, e.g. if you are on a corporate network, your IT department may decide to change the default Word start-up path to a custom directory (Word 2007 or later: Word Options dialogue, Advanced section, File Locations... button, "Startup" setting; Word 2003 or earlier: Tools -> Options, "File Locations" tab, "Startup " setting). In order for TransTools to work in Microsoft Word, move TransTools.loc and TransTools.dot (Word 2003 or earlier) or TransTools.dotm (Word 2007 or later) from the previous add-in location to the new one. Do not forget to move TransTools configuration file to a centralised location as well – refer to item 4 above for instructions.
