How to make row height adaptable to row contents and/or allow a row to appear on several pages in Microsoft Word

January 07, 2010

Sometimes, especially in Word documents that were produced by converting PDFs, rows do not expand to fit the text as it expands during translation, or, if the text shrinks after translation, they remain too tall for the text. Also, some rows will not break across pages, creating large areas of whitespace at the bottom of some pages. This article explains how to resolve this issue.

  • Word 2007 or later:

Click anywhere inside the table row or select the row(s) that you would like to make variable-height. You will see a new tab called 'Layout' at the top of Word window. Click this tab and select 'Properties' from the Table group to open Table Properties dialogue:

Select the Row tab and deselect 'Specify height' checkbox or select 'At least' instead of 'Exactly'. You can also select 'Allow row to break across pages' option so that the row may appear on several pages at once if there is too much text in it (e.g. when the amount of text expands due to Trados 2007 / Wordfast Classic formatting).

  • Word 2003 or earlier:

Click anywhere inside the table row or select the row(s) that you would like to make variable-height. Click Table -> Table Properties... to open Table Properties dialogue.
