Language checking commands

Excel

Category: Proof-reading

As you know, Microsoft Excel is an ideal application for documents with numerical information, very much due to its advanced calculation capabilities. This is one of the reasons why Excel is used so widely for writing simple schedules, cost estimates, financial reports, technical datasheets, etc. Very often these could contain quite a lot of text – which needs to be translated.

The problem with translating Excel spreadsheets is that it is very easy to overlook something. For example, you may not notice some text hidden from view due to cell formatting, or you may accidentally skip something because Excel's text editing capabilities are not very usable from a translator's viewpoint.

The commands in this category provide a quick way to ensure that everything (the entire worksheet or selected range) has been translated. They allow you to find "oversights" (such as text hidden from view or text you accidentally missed) before the file goes to a proof-reader or before you proof-read it yourself.

Commands overview

Command Description Usage
Check Translation Checks a spreadsheet or selected range and highlights cells (changes their background color) containing text written in the source language (i.e. potentially not translated). Use to find text accidentally skipped during translation
Remove Highlight Removes all highlights of a specific colour from spreadsheet/selected range Use after you have reviewed the marked-up spreadsheet/selection
