Post-installation notes

Congratulations! You have installed TransTools. Use these guidelines to start using the software:

Quick Navigation

TransTools for Microsoft Word

  1. Checking successful installation

Open Microsoft Word. If you have Microsoft Office 2003 or earlier, check for "TransTools" menu at the top of the application window. If you have Microsoft Office 2007 or later, you should see "TransTools" tab on the ribbon. For more information on TransTools for Word interface, click here.

    If you don't see it:

  2. What to do if TransTools is not visible on the ribbon or menu after a successful installation

To make sure that Microsoft Word can see TransTools, do the following:

If the above does not help, Word may have added TransTools to the list of disabled items, often after a serious crash. Try the following solution:

  3. What to do if there are security warnings

If you see a security warning during Microsoft Word start-up (or the yellow warning bar below the ribbon) or if nothing happens when you try to run any TransTools command, your Macro Security settings are blocking the macros contained in the TransTools add-in. You need to change Microsoft Word's Macro Security settings as follows:

If the above does not work, also see the item below.

  4. What to do if you see a warning when you click a button in TransTools ribbon

In some cases you may see the following error when you click any button in TransTools ribbon:

    Macro not found warning

    There are two possible issues:

    1. TransTools add-in is blocked by your antivirus program. Some antivirus programs may block specific TransTools add-ins, such as TransTools for Word, because they consider them infected. One of such antivirus programs is 360 Total Security. TransTools products are checked for viruses on a regular basis and there has never been a single report about TransTools users being infected due to TransTools products. Do the following: close Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, then uninstall TransTools (make sure that the option to keep user settings in the uninstallation program remains checked), then go to your antivirus settings and add the problematic add-in's folder to the trusted locations list. Add-in folders are as follows:

      • TransTools for Word: C:\Users\<your_user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP
      • TransTools for Excel, TransTools for PowerPoint: C:\Users\<your_user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AddIns
      • TransTools for Visio, TransTools for AutoCAD: C:\Users\<your_user_name>\Documents\TransTools

Note: 'STARTUP' and 'AddIns' folders mentioned above may be translated in some versions of Microsoft Office such as the French or German versions.

    2. Problem after an update to Microsoft Office. Do the following: close Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, then uninstall TransTools (make sure that the option to keep user settings in the uninstallation program remains checked). Then download the latest version of TransTools from the Download page and install it. Open the Office application where you had the problem. The issue should be fixed.
  5. For Wordfast Classic users

If you are a user of Wordfast Classic, TransTools may be deactivated by Wordfast Classic as soon as you start translation with Wordfast. If this happens and you want to use both tools simultaneously (there are no known incompatibilities between the two), do the following:

    Restart Word.

If TransTools menus are not visible (in Office 2003 and earlier, there should be TransTools item on the main menu, in Office 2007 and later, there should be TransTools group under the Add-Ins tab), then do the following:
  6. What to do if TransTools appears to be loaded but it is not visible on the ribbon

In some cases TransTools is loaded, but it is not visible on Word ribbon. It is possible to fix this issue by resetting Word ribbon. Follow the steps below:

    1. Before you do this, make sure that you have not performed any customization of Word ribbon, e.g. added custom ribbon tabs or buttons, repositioned commands on the ribbon, enabled Developer tab, etc. When the ribbon is reset, all these customizations will be lost. So, if you made such customizations, you will need to know how to reproduce them.
    2. Open Word Options dialogue (File -> Options).
    3. Select Customize Ribbon in the list on the left.
    4. Click Reset -> Reset all customizations...
    5. Close the Word Options dialogue by clicking [OK].

TransTools for Microsoft Excel

  1. Enable (activate) TransTools for Excel.

    Open Microsoft Excel.

  2. Macro Security

If 'TransTools' tab (Excel 2007 and newer versions) or 'TransTools' menu (Excel 2003 and earlier versions) does not appear, your Macro Security settings are blocking the macros contained in the TransTools add-in. To change your Macro Security settings:

If the above does not work, also see the item below.

  3. What to do if you see a warning when you click a button in TransTools ribbon

In some cases, usually after an update to Microsoft Office, you may see the following error when you click a button in TransTools ribbon:

TransTools for Microsoft Visio

  1. Open TransTools for Visio

Open TransTools for Visio.vsd (by default, this file is located under 'My Documents\TransTools' folder). If you already have Microsoft Visio running, you can do this by double-clicking this file in Windows Explorer or opening it with File -> Open. If you have Microsoft Visio 2010 or a newer version, you should see TransTools under Add-Ins ribbon tab. If you have Microsoft Visio 2007 or an earlier version, you will see TransTools menu at the top of Visio application window.

  2. Blocking in Visio 2013 and newer versions

In Visio 2013 and newer versions of Visio, you may see the following message when you open TransTools for Visio:
“You are attempting to open a file type (Visio 2000-2002 Binary Drawings, Templates and Stencils) that has been blocked by your File Block settings in the Trust Center.”

Notification about TransTools for Visio being blocked

To open TransTools for Visio, you need to change File Block Settings under Visio Options:

    1. Open Visio Options dialogue by clicking the File tab and then clicking Options menu at the bottom.
    2. In the Visio Options dialogue, select Trust Center from the list on the left and then click Trust Center Settings... to the right.
    3. In the Trust Center dialogue, select File Block Settings from the list on the left and make sure that the box for “Visio 2000-2002 Binary Drawings, Templates and Stencils” is not checked:
How to disable blocking of Visio 2000-2002 Binary Drawings
    4. Click OK to save Trust Center settings and OK to close the Options dialogue.
  3. Macro Security

If you can't see TransTools menu, your Macro Security settings block the macros contained in the file. To unblock macros, it is recommended to set Macro Security level to Medium. To change Macro Security settings:

  4. Visual Basic support

If TransTools is present under Add-Ins tab but nothing happens when you click TransTools buttons, it is possible that Visual Basic for Applications support was not installed during installation of Microsoft Visio. To install Visual Basic for Applications support, go to Control Panel, go to Programs and Features, find Microsoft Visio in the list of installed programs, right-click and select Modify. You will see a dialogue called “Change your installation of Microsoft Visio” with several options. You need to select Add or Remove Features and click Continue. When you reach the screen showing the list of features, find Visual Basic for Applications under Office Shared Features, click the Down arrow and select “Run from My Computer” as shown below:

Screenshot: Enabling Visual Basic for Applications support during Visio installation

Click Continue and finish installation of additional features. You may be prompted to restart your computer.

  5. Group policies blocking Visual Basic macros (for corporate networks)

If you are on a corporate network, macros may be blocked for Microsoft Office programs using group policies. Please consult your system administrator to check whether they use group policies that block macros in Microsoft Office programs.

  6. Open files to process

Open Visio files you would like to process (unless they are already open). You should do it from the same application window – double-click files in Windows Explorer or open with File -> Open... (note - do not start another session of Microsoft Visio by selecting it from Windows Start menu or double-clicking its Desktop icon).

  7. Switch to TransTools for Visio.vsd by selecting it from Window menu.
  8. Select 'Collect Translateable Text from Files' or 'Multiple Replace in Files' from TransTools menu.

Notes:

By default, VBA support is not installed when you install BricsCAD. In order to install it, follow the instructions below:

If you have any problems running TransTools for BricsCAD, send a support request via the support page.

Initial configuration of TransTools package

If you are about to use Language Check and Localisation features of TransTools for Word / Excel, you will need to configure the package first.

At present, TransTools configuration is accomplished from 'TransTools for Word'. Open Microsoft Word. If you have Word 2003 or earlier, choose 'TransTools' menu, and select "Configure...". If you have Word 2007 or later, select the Add-Ins tab, click TransTools button from 'TransTools Add-In' group, and select "Configure..." from the menu . You will be presented with a configuration dialogue. See TransTools Configuration page for instructions on how to use it.

Moving TransTools configuration file to a centralised location

If your translation department is on a LAN (local area network), you may wish to provide every translator with access to the same configuration file (and thus the same configuration settings).

In order to do this:

Changing location of 'TransTools for Word' add-in

In some cases, e.g. if you are on a corporate network, your IT department may decide to change the default Word start-up path to a custom directory (Word 2003 or earlier: Tools -> Options, "File Locations" tab, "Startup " setting; Word 2007 or later: Word Options dialogue, Advanced section, File Locations... button, "Startup" setting). In order for TransTools to work in Microsoft Word, move TransTools.loc and TransTools.dot (Word 2003 or earlier) or TransTools.dotm (Word 2007 or later) from the previous add-in location to the new one. Do not forget to move TransTools configuration file to a centralised location as well - refer to item 4 above for instructions.

Migrating TransTools configuration from another computer/user

Once you have installed TransTools, you can import TransTools configuration from another user or computer by using TransTools Migration Utility which is distributed together with TransTools. For more information on how to run TransTools Migration Utility and import configuration settings, read TransTools Migration Utility documentation.
