How Insert Symbol / Quotes tool can help you in your work

This tool is somewhat similar to Word's Insert Symbol command (Word 2003 or ealier: Insert -> Symbol menu; Word 2007 or later: Insert tab, Symbols group, Symbol button). However, it is specially geared for translators, allowing one to insert symbols and quotation marks easier and more predictably.

The list of predefined symbols and quotation mark styles can be configured under the ‘Insert Symbol’ tab of TransTools Configuration command.

Where to find the tool

To run Insert Symbol / Quotes tool, click Insert Symbol / Quotes button on TransTools ribbon in Word:

Using Insert Symbol / Quotes tool

Make a selection in the document:

  • To insert a symbol, place the cursor where you would like to insert a symbol (or make a selection in order to replace it with the symbol);
  • To insert quotation marks, place the cursor where you would like to insert quotes or select the text you would like to wrap in quotation marks.

Run Insert Symbol / Quotes command. You will be presented with this dialogue:

  1. Regular (printing) symbols: This section presents regular (printing) symbols. Press a button corresponding to the symbol you would like to insert.
    These symbols can be configured in the Frequently Used Symbols section of the Configuration dialogue under the Insert Symbol tab.
  2. Quotation marks: Press a button to insert quotation marks of the desired style.
    The available quotation mark styles can be configured in the Available Quotation Mark Styles section of the Configuration dialogue under the Insert Symbol tab.
    The default quotation marks styles are “curly double quotes”, ‘curly single quotes’ and «double angle quotes».
  3. Non-printing and confusing symbols: Press a button corresponding to the non-printing/confusing symbol you would like to insert. Use the tooltips to get more information on the symbol.
    The available non-printing and confusing symbols can be configured in the Available Non-printing and Confusing Characters section of the Configuration dialogue under the Insert Symbol tab.
    The default symbols include non-breaking space, line break, page break and manual hyphen.

When you press a button, the corresponding symbol(s) will be inserted at the selection in the current document, and the dialogue will be closed. You need to re-run Insert Symbol / Quotes command to insert another symbol.
